Why Is Bubonic Plague in America?

CDC Report: Emerging Infectious Diseases

I always thought that Bubonic Plague was a history lesson and had been eradicated long ago. This is a disturbing revelation. As I researched this development, I found that Bubonic and Pneumonic plagues are similar, but are transmitted differently. Bubonic is transmitted from contact with pets exposed to fleas that have feasted on a Bubonic carrier, so it is blood borne. Pneumonic is just that, you just breathe the air containing particles of Yersinia pestis (Y. pestis) … I find it amazing that North America has Y. pestis in its soil and CDC has studied and tested for Y. pestis for years. There have been casualties and deaths in rural areas. Maybe that is why little or no media attention was given. However, Hantavirus got a lot of media attention in 1993, because it took so long to identify the source … it scared a lot of people.

Maybe Americans are not aware of many of these horrible diseases, because their interests lie elsewhere, or maybe because American’s need to know has been decided by someone else. Would America’s prosperity be tainted if something as common as a plague virus/bacteria is part of our “special and privileged” environment? How would a "Plague" or "21th Century Death" affect you?

I think the reason why the bubonic plague is in America is because Many people migrate in and out of the country to go to different places and they come in contact with animals and people who may carry the disease by fleas or air

I would never think that the plague would be anywhere near me. Now that I have read this, I learned that I could get the plague. this was a real eye-opener.

Cities would be evacauated and the government would quarantine entire populations in certain cities like D.C. or New York. It would spread in weeks, because of our highly efficient transportation, and result in a higher mortality rate. Millions would die probably because of our government, because they haven't been very punctual when it comes to sending help (Hurricane Katrina).-Josh Roye

I think the people in America eas infected because of trade and of those sneaky rats, which carries those digusting fleas. Also because those who were infected tried to leave their are and so the diesease travelled along with them. So there thats how it got to America

I believe America's prosperity would be tainted if they knew about the plague virus being in America. We're already in a tizzy about the economy, but if our President Elect just put it out there that there's a chance we could get the plague since people have already died from it, the whole country would go straight into chaos. People would be on a 1-way ticket out of here, and those who ran may spread the disease to the rest of the world. If America suffered, the rest of the world would suffer about 20 times more, our population altogether might even die off! I'd be affected greatly, I'd have the burden of worrying whether or not I'd be the one taking care of my siblings in cousins everyday, I'd be afraid of catching the disease, but then again, who wouldn't?

Having the bobonic plague or any plague America would affect me in many negative ways. First mentally because if i kno there was a plague in our area, i would be scared of getting the plague and probably wouldnt go outside anymore. Then if i stopped going outside, alot would happen because i go outside everyday and play baskelball. so just knowing there is a plague in America or close to the are can frighten alot of people and make the economy go crazy and thats why i think people are choosing not to bring to much attention to the subject that there is a plague in America.

A plauge similar to the one that happened in Europe in the 13th century, would affect all of us. People would begin to die, and we would all be exposed to death an pain and all of those bad emotions that could scar us mentally for the future, that is if we don't catch the disease and die ourselves. America would break, and would seperate. People will decide to escape moving the disease into other parts of the world. Everything would be closed down at some point if the disease was that bad. School's will be closed, because of the fear of a kid having it and giving it to everyone in the school. Boddies would be burnt, and all of our lives would change. Advancements would stop and food would become the most important thing in life, and no one would give it to you. There would be huge revolts with people being angry at the government and at doctors and everything. It would completely destroy the modern, orderly civilization in the United States, and if the whole country is destroyed then of course I would also be affected.

Yes, i do believe that the bubonic plague would afect America's prosperity. Many americans..or people in general are so oblivious when it comes to things of this sort. It can happen to us..any time..any place. Anything is possible. This would have a drastic and wearing affect on America because of this fact..and because it would be so unexpected. Similar to the australian python..silent, yet so deadly. <<
It would affect me because of the most obvious reason..i would be placed at risk for death..or should i say the black death?

I believe the plague started in a mouse or rat by a flea the flea migrated to another person and they travel to diffrent places that is how the bubonic plague migrated through diffrent people

As of course us Americans have a tendency of ignorance thinking that certain situation cant happen to us or occur on this part of the earth. Yes I believe America's (propersity) would be tainted because none of these dieases have a major effect on the people. It would effect me in major way because from what I read it seems like you can catch it from inhaling the air or certain animal. With that I wouldnt want household pet no more, become vegeterian so I wont deal with meat. I would have a hard time eating cause some of plague is the soil which we grow crops in. It would be a great deal in america. It would be (Americas down fall!)

I think that americas prosperity would go down if something, such as a plague were to affect us. i personally believe that the econmy would fall apart and go to a spiraling downfal into a bliss. first of all if it were to be something as big as the black death more humans would probably react the same way, but because now we have more technology, there is a small hint of a possibility that the reaction would some what change. Maybe america could handle it, if prepared, but as an out of the blue situation, i highly doubt it.

it would affect me, because i would probbably die, or worry about others dieng and being affected about the plague its self. Also, it woukd totally alter my life, the people i hang out with, see, eat after, and etc. so a s a Young adult it would flip and totally turn my whole life around.

The Bubonic Plague would have a really big effect on America. Of course America would be tainted by this Bubonic Plague disease. Everyone would try to move out and migrate to another place to avoid the plague.i know i would This disease will affect me in many ways. My health, my whole life. I hope and pray that that this disease does not come here.

The Bubonic Plague will change america a lot. It will affect the population and the economy.People from other countries will not see america as how it is well known to be anymore.People from america would flee to other countries and america would go down. If the plague were to happen it will affect me in a bad way. I would be very depressed all the time just knowing what is happening and will i ever get to see my family again. I would probably barely go outside and try to stay indoors at all time to avoid the air that could make me have it. Overall if it happent i would be very depressing to anyone.

I can't imagine if the Plauge was to spread in America like it did in Europe. I think we would have much better control of the bacteria but there would still be many casualties that could not be avoided. If the Plague were to spread in America I think many would stop and think before they came here, especially the ones in Europe. They know much more of the Black death because many of their ancestors died bcause of it. The Economy would also be effected because many would think they were dying and would never be cured so they would try to spend what remainder of their life they had doing something daring and dangerous because they were going to die anyway. Many would withdraw all of their money from the banks and others would simply leave the contry so as not to catch it. In the process they would probably spread the Plague more. If the plague were to appear here it not just be catostrophic for just the U.S. but also for other countires where people fled to to avoid the plague.

I think that the Bubonic Plague is in America because of all things that we get from overseas contains bacteria in it or surrounding it. I also think that its spreading by maybe from fleas in animals that come over in America, or perhaps someone migrated over here with a pet with that disease had it, and it happened to spread from animal to animal. Another way is from products that we are recieving from other countries.

I think the plague would just destroy our economy worse than what our government has already done. I don't think evacuations would be smart because that would spread the disease further through the country.

Luis Robledo The reason that the plague is here is because of trade. Know that the plague is in america it could spread. our everyday life could never be the same again. If the plague spreads then would in constant fear of the plague, but i am sure that the black deaths will not spread anymore.

To answer your profound statement no it will not taint america because america has been tainted by the leadership of George Bush.He has tainted us so I bad i think hes the one whose pet had the diease.Yes it will taint us the more because we already owe countries money and are in debt. So if this plague does get exposed this will be like an addded bonus.I can just see the countries rejoicing known that are population is decreasing by the second.Yes this will affect me because this thing gets out of control i will not be living my house.I will have all my food shipped to my house from private owned farmers and i will be homeschooled.I will be careful not to let any and everybody in my house.Trust me if this diease gets more corrupt i will be the sequel to I AM LEGEND!!!!!

I have always thought that the Black Plague was just a piece of history that would never come back again, but now I believe that the plague had been existing in this world all along just in a much smaller scale, therefore why it may not have caught our attention. The plague could have already been in this country since the time that European discovers "discovered" the Americas, or the plague could've been brought here through the numerous migrations.
I believe that America's prosperity would be tainted if the plague where to appear again on a large scale. Many people would die and society could end up in a turmoil. However, I believe that if the plague were to reveal itself that we would have a much better hold on the situation compared to Europe in the 14th century, and maybe America be able to revive itself by miracuously finding a cure for it.
This would effect me along with everybody else in the world, we would be constantly worried about would we get infected next and what would become of the world.

The bubonic plague is in America because, there have been relentless trade over seas that has brought many things over here. There has been documented proof that there have been pathogens transfered between country to country, so I wouldn't rule out trade.

I believe the economy would take a hit because if people are getting sick, who's going to work? People would be freaked out and extremely saddened by the death of their families. But I do believe, however, that if the plague were to come back fiercely, not just in small rural towns, we would have a much better hold on the situation because we know the cause of it, unlike the people in 14th century Europe who had no idea why it was happening. We could use the modern treatments that exist to try to save as many people as we could. Even with that though the loss of family and friends would effect anyone. The govenment would probably do more screening of imported products, and there would probably be a whole medical organization to find the cure for the plague and how to make us immune to it.
It would effect me in a way that I would become more paranoid and pay closer attention to my surroundings and what I come in contact to.

I believe the Bubonic Plague is in America because of travel. When people travel to different areas, they may not be immune to their diseases. If they contract this disease and come back to America, then they could possibly spread it to other people.

I seriously believe the American government does not inform the people of "the plague" is because they do not consider it a threat to our environment.
-->Yes the history of "the plague" is terrifying but medical research has supplied us with better resources and such.
-->Yes "the plague" has proven to be fatal but mainly because people were not educated on the symptoms and doctors didn't diagnose it correctly or in a timely manner. But if people knew that the bubonic and pneumonic variations of "the plague" were more treatable than the septimicic then a little bit more relief would be experienced.
Furthermore everyone please consider the cliche belief that "ignorance is bliss!" It is this belief that runs America [[all in personal opinion, of course]]. People often do not consider any disease or epidemic as a threat until it indirectly affects him/her. Commom diseases proven to be fatal that people ignore:: HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Tuberculosis, and Measles.
So until a peak number of deaths [as in the near hundred thousands] is reached, then the American people will still remain obtuse to "the plague" situation..

I think the Bubonic Plague got here in the first place because of people migrating or trying to get away from all of the infectious diseases, but that didn't really work, because here it is. Like many other people, I never thought that the plague would get near me, because it seems to have been gone for so long. Maybe America's prosperity would be tainted because there would be no one here to share in the wealth if there was any. Everyone would be trying to get as far away from it as possible if they found out about it, including me. It would affect me because I would be trying to get away from it also, and that doesn't always work. The Black Death has a negative effect on everybody.
